Administrative Assistant/Secretarial
The Administrative Assistant and Secretaries are often the first people a person comes in contact with at the Sheriff’s Office. These employees may set the tone of the person’s entire visit, so a good attitude is important. Responsibilities include maintaining employee/personnel files, preparing civil process documents for service, balance and maintaining the Sheriff’s Office bank accounts, answering the phones, and a multitude of other things. Mobility to work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment such as personal computer, including word processing and database software; calculator; copy and fax machine; hand flexibility to perform typing for extended periods of time; hearing and speech to converse in person and over the telephone; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen are required. The employee should be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, no felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, and the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job.
Deputy Sheriffs
Uniformed Deputy Sheriffs have general law enforcement duties, including maintaining regular patrols and responding to calls for service. Much of their time is spent responding to calls and doing paperwork. They may direct traffic at the scene of an accident, investigate crimes, or be a storm spotter. They are also responsible for building relationships with the residents of the county.
Deputies may work alone or with a partner. While on patrol, officers attempt to become thoroughly familiar with their patrol area, the community, and remain alert for anything unusual. Hazards to public safety are investigated or noted, and officers are dispatched to individual calls for assistance. During their shift, they may engage with the community; enforce laws; or issue warnings or citations.
Dietary
Dietary staff is tasked with providing three balanced and nutritious meals per day to each inmate, while also providing special diet meals to those restricted because of allergies, medical diagnosis, or religious reasons. These civilian dietary workers should be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, no felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, and the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job.
Dispatch/Communications
Dispatchers and 911 call takers work around the clock answering calls for service and dispatching personnel to scenes using high-tech communications equipment. Dispatchers must be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, dependable transportation, no felony convictions of violent misdemeanors, good hearing and vision, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, good written and verbal skills, and be computer proficient. Certification will be required following sufficient training.
Information Technology
An IT position generally involves managing and storing data using computers, software, databases, networks, and servers. As an IT professional, you may write programs, maintain networks, analyze systems, and provide technical support. The employee should be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, no felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, and the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job.
Jail/Detention Officers
St. Clair County Jail currently has 136 inmate beds. Most of those beds are filled by contracting with the United States Marshal Service. A majority of the jailer positions are held by civilian (non-commissioned) employees. These employees provide care and treatment of inmates, and process, monitor, feed and transport inmates. They manage inmate holding areas, ensure that inmates remain in custody, transport and escort inmates within secured areas according to relevant laws, policies, and procedures. We are seeking a dedicated person to join our team as a Detention Officer. The ideal candidate will interact with inmates every day (with another officer if face to face) and ensure that operational activities are done in a way that the safety and security of the facility is intact. This position is very fast paced and you will be on your feet a lot. Requirements: at least 21 years of age, a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, NO felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from work, ability to pass a background check and drug test (per policy, no marijuana usage is allowed once hired), a good work ethic and strong moral compass, the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job, prior law enforcement experience is advantageous. Responsibilities: maintain security and order within the detention facility, monitor inmate activities and behavior to prevent disturbances or escapes, conduct searches of inmates, cells, and common areas for contraband, enforce rules and regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of staff and inmates, respond to emergencies, including fights, medical incidents, and fires, conduct headcounts and inspections to ensure all inmates are accounted for, escort inmates to and from various locations within the facility, prepare written reports on incidents, disciplinary actions, and inmate behavior. Desired (but not required) Skills: military experience or training, CPR and First Aid certification, strong conflict management skills, excellent report writing skills, knowledge of law enforcement procedures and protocols

Jail Secretary
We are seeking a dedicated Secretary to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing administrative support and ensuring efficient office operations. This will include filing, managing supporting documentation, retrieving mail daily, sorting/logging mail, answering phones, scheduling appointments, setting up zoom calls, light cleaning, all in a very fast paced environment. Expect an abundance of facility security protocols and court/law enforcement terminology and practices to learn. Requirements: At least 21 years of age, a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, NO felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, ability to pass a background check and drug test (per policy, no marijuana usage is allowed once hired), a good work ethic and strong moral compass, the physical ability to fulfill the job requirements of the job, prior law enforcement experience is advantageous. Responsibilities: Provide support to jail staff as needed, organize and maintain physical and digital files, demonstrate excellent phone etiquette when handling calls, offer customer support by addressing inquiries and resolving issues, utilize computerized systems for data entry and record keeping, operate phone systems efficiently and go to the post office to deliver and retrieve mail, daily. Skills: strong personal assistant skills, ability to organize and file documents effectively, experience in law enforcement or courts is advantageous, excellent phone etiquette and communication skills, competence in computerized systems for office tasks, dedication to providing outstanding customer service, ability to operate phone systems proficiently, must have good spelling, writing, typing, and verbal skills.
Maintenance
Maintenance workers perform general building maintenance and repair work including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and grounds. They must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions, safely operate hand tools and power-hand tools all while maintaining the safety and security of the facility. The employee should be at least 18 years of age, have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, no felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, and the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job.
Nurse
Jail nurses examine patients in the jail environment, evaluate their response to treatment, and monitor their progress while under the supervision of a Doctor and healthcare service. Jail nurses procure mental health and emotional support for inmates through the healthcare service. This employee must hold a LPN certification or higher.
Transport
We are seeking a dedicated Prisoner Transport Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for transporting inmates to and from court and medical appointments, transfers to or from other facilities. May require more than 8 hours on any given day and call out rotation. On days that no transportations are needed, the option of not working may be given. Other duties may require you to help jail staff with daily operations if not on a transport. Requirements: At least 21 years of age, P.O.S.T. certified in Missouri OR previous prisoner transport experience, a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, NO felony convictions or violent misdemeanors, a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from work, a good work ethic and strong moral compass, the physical ability to fulfill the requirements of the job. Responsibilities: Transport inmates to and from court or medical appointments, transfer inmates to drop off at other facilities. Supervise and manage inmate activities both within the facility and during transports, conduct regular inspections of the transport vehicles to prevent contraband and maintain security, enforce rules and regulations to ensure compliance, respond to emergencies and incidents within the facility, document all activities, incidents, and behavior observations, knowledge of conflict management techniques, ability to supervise and maintain control in challenging situations, strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work under pressure and handle stressful situations calmly, physical fitness and ability to stand or ride in a vehicle for long periods, must pass a background check and drug screening (- By agency policy, marijuana use is not allowed once hired)
